An even nicer - and surely well-known - example is About This Particular Macintosh, a Mac-related e-zine first published in April 1995 and issued monthly in DOCMaker format until July 1999 (from August 1999 on, the offline Webzine was made available as HTML pages you could read with a browser, or in eDOC format, and subsequently as PDF too). The Apple Easter Eggs publication I made available in this post is a nice example of what can be done with DOCMaker. No wonder it was widely used to create e-zines, self-contained publications that were very popular in the late 1990s. What I always loved of DOCMaker is its versatility. This way you can easily jump to relevant sections of a manual, for instance, right from the first page, or reach a related topic or section without leafing through the whole document, or have a tooltip-style note popping up near a picture. You can also navigate inside a document not only by using the classic Table of Contents, but also by adding buttons in pages or using the multimedia element as a ‘hot spot’. DOCMaker is more sophisticated, since it integrates a word processor and the ability to place multimedia content such as graphics, sound files, and movies in a page. You could select it from the Chooser and create an eDOC document from any word-processing application, like Microsoft Word, WordPerfect, WriteNow, ClarisWorks, etc.

eDOC was basically a printer driver residing in the Extensions folder.

SheepShaver is an Open Source PowerPC Mac OS run-time environment.I remember a time in the mid-to-late 1990s when most software programs for the Macintosh that came with some form of electronic documentation (I’m not talking of plain-text readme files, but longer documents with instructions or complete manuals) used stand-alone documents generated by two applications: either eDOC or DOCMaker. That is, it enables you to run PowerPC Classic Mac OS software on your computer, even if you are using a different operating system. However, you still need a copy of Mac OS and a PowerMac ROM image to use this program.

SheepShaver partially emulates a MPC 603 cpu, which is way older and lacks GPU support.I may be that QemuPPC Mac OS runs the game. SIT files may be inflated in Catalina by The Unarchiver, btw, free from Mac App Store. SheepShaver is a PowerPC (PPC) emulator which allows you to run Mac OS 7.5 up to Mac OS 9.0.4 on various platforms, such as on Windows.

SheepShaver started as a commercial project in 1998 but is now open source since 2002.ĭownload the full New World ROMs archive from Macintosh Repository, extract it, rename the - Mac OS ROM 1.1.rom file to Mac OS ROM and drop it into the SheepShaver folder.

Download the Mac OS 9.0.4 installer image from Macintosh Repository (SheepShaver doesn’t work with anything newer). What is SheepShaver PPC emulator (for Windows + Mac OS X)? SheepShaver is a PowerPC (PPC) emulator which allows you to run Mac OS 7.5 up to Mac OS 9.0.4 on various platforms, such as on Windows. SheepShaver started as a commercial project in 1998 but is now open source since 2002. Three years ago I posted about how I’d gone back and recovered all my old websites I’d published over the years and packed them up into a Docker image, and last year I’d idly mused that I should go back and recover the multitude of websites that I’d designed but never actually uploaded anywhere. I finally got around to doing that over the weekend, and they’re all up on ! Some are the original HTML source, some are just the Photoshop mockups, but that now contains the almost sum total of every single website I’d created (and there’s a lot of them). The only one missing is the very very first one… The Dire Marsh news updates are from early 1998, but I’d copied most of the layout from the previous site as evidenced by the (broken) visitor at the left that says “ half-crazed Myth fanatics have visited this site since 21/12/97”.
